Do I live in a friendly or hostile universe?
Albert Einstein said that was the most fundamental question humans have to answer for themselves.
What type of world do you decide to live in?
I know personally that I am much happier when I am living in a world that is full of love and passion rather than disgust and hatred. Of course I flip flop sometimes, but its important that you remember what you are set out to do.
Sure if you want to live in the negative type of world that is your choice, but just understand the consequences of that decision and don’t blame it on anyone else. We all have a choice to do what we wish to do with our lives.
Some may say “but I am stuck” and when I hear that…I often challenge that belief. Here are the 4 things I do (advice given by a speaker…but I totally forget his name) when I need to make a change in my life.
1. I’ve Had it: Enough is enough. I am tired of this crap. This is what I will do and dammit if I have to cry to succeed I will. Yesterday I was at work and there was this big slice of pizza sitting right in front of me in a box.
I opened the box…looked at it…closed the box and slammed my fist down on the table. DAMNIT I AM NOT GOING TO EAT THAT!
Sometimes you have to do things that are out of your regular actions to change. Hell I have never done that before, but it worked. So, maybe if that situation happens again I will do that again.
2. Decision: Make decisions that you need to make.
The day that you decide what you will do with your life is one of the most inspirational days of your life. I love writing down on a piece of paper all of the things I have to make decisions about and then prioritize / categorize them.
3. Desire: Simply put…how freaking bad do you want it. On my whiteboard right next to my bed I have written “I will do whatever it takes.”
4. Resolve: Use the three most important words written below. I will and Until.
So what are the 3 most powerful words that you can use?
I will…and until.
Let me explain. The words I will empower you to do anything in your life. No more I wish, I want to, I would like to do this…it is only I will do it. It is important to realize that there is no good time to start something. If you keep putting it off, you will never make it. I used to do this with diets.
I will start tomorrow. Well tomorrow is never as good as it is today. One more thing, and this is off track a bit. If you are “starting a diet”…why not just use the words “I am going to eat healthier.” This is great for 2 reasons. 1. You don’t have to listen to people saying oh my god your dieting? 2. It can and will become something you fight against rather than making proactive strides towards eating healthy. Just my thoughts on that. So, I will is one of the most powerful words that you can use because you WILL do it. There is no maybe. No end failure. No, it is a process. Sure you will stumble along the way, maybe get the crap kicked out of you…but you get back up. Get back on your feet no matter what happens.
You hurt yourself, recover. You get dumped, you take time to improve upon yourself. You fail a test, you study harder. This is not a hard plan. Don’t let your emotions get the best of you because if you let that happen you will be lost in a sea that has an endless horizon. Trust me…I’ve been there. The second word is until. Until is incredibly important because you can say “I will try and try again UNTIL I accomplish this.” You see what I am saying here? If you attempt and attempt and attempt, eventually you will hit the nail on the head. It is just a law of averages.
Take down the walls. Welcome all types of experiences. I bought a Go Pro HD HERO video camera the other day. I told myself that this year would be the year of the challenge, and I plan on video taping all of it!I am absolutely thrilled with the quality it produces and the potential I have with creating lots of projects.
Embrace the numbers. The only way you can truly tell if you are improving is my attributing numbers to everything you are doing. I have recently started writing down every single set and rep I do and have a book overflowing with stats. The great thing about excel is that you can chart your progress out and really see how you are doing. This is absolutely fantastic because I can see exactly what I did the week before and try to beat it. Then, when you beat your best from the week before you feel on top of the world. There is that great sense of pride in yourself that you had the first time you accomplished your goals. I suggest you use this because it is really working for me at the moment.
Sometimes the negative side of you can take advantage of you. I use this song when I need to break out of something that’s really striking me. Never let anyone step all over you and take advantage of your love…even yourself. To those who haven’t read my writing before about the subject of thoughts and emotions…check a few posts back. Your thoughts and your emotions can plague you as much as they can help you. However, the best thing you can do is make a decision that you will win and to continue forward.
Never forget these words:
I will.
Until.

Haha we are all interconnected in one way or another. it is good though that we have similar philosophies! The world could use a little more good in it and some integrity. I am proud that you are changing the language of your words and turning them into something proactive!

Mikael,
You are spot on with the statement of “eating healthier is a progressive act.” That is very very true. It is about making sustainable life long and lasting changes. That is what my project is about in general. Awesome comment.

Fear is the only thing to be feared. Do not fear anything else. When you feel afraid, attack your fears with vigor. You will accomplish great things.

Wow….wow….WOW! Powerful!
Evan,
You are talking about attitude and lifestyle, rather than finite to-do lists (though lists can be part of that change process, as you mentioned, to help you become aware of what you want to address and to put the steps in order). I recall taking yoga classes in college, 25+ years ago. The instructor emphasized that yoga is not a series of postures and breathing techniques limited to the class time. It is attitude and lifestyle for health. You do not need to pursue yoga, but change is something that you become rather than what you do.

LOVE IT!!! keep on keepin’ on!
I love it Evan! I choose to follow a similar path, just keep going up and make yourself and the world a better place! R
So beautiful and inspirational. Truly magnificent: you are.
I loved this! This one and the one about fear really lifted me up and got me back to writing positively again. I’m really going to enjoy taking a new outlook on life into the new year and so on. I appreciate the follow as well.
“I write things out and I look back to find that I already am doing what I envisioned.”
OMG! I have had this experience, too. I was whining about my life once, then realized that I’ve been paid to play with horses, paid to ride bikes, paid to bang out web pages, and now I’m learning to get paid to play the organ and direct choirs and make music while occasionally getting paid to tinker with bikes (and, to top it off, I have the best fiance in the universe). What a wake-up moment that was!
I so want a jersey with your graphic that says, “STOP SAYING I WISH, START SAYING I WILL.’ Awesome!
Point number 3 is so important … the real secret of self-discipline is motivation (someone out there wrote a phenomenal blog entry about that, and totally rearranged my mind for me), and the secret to motivation is simply desire — figuring out what makes yourself tick.
Thanks for following my blog, btw! I feel honored. You write eloquently, and your philosophy is rock-solid.
Talk about an inspiring post! I feel pretty honored that you followed me (And now I can follow you back–this is awesome!). “Until” was an interesting addition to important words and I like it!
I totally agree with you on the eating healthier vs diet statements. Just because I do WeightWatchers, people think I’m on a diet but I’m really not. I still enjoy every food I really want but at the same time, I’m constantly looking for ways to eat better. Diets are for sissies who don’t stick to anything. Eating healthier is a progressive act.
Your enthusiasm is infectious! I WILL!
Positivity prevails…
I’m so glad I found you…although technically you found me first. I needed this today!
Scary, You write like me or is it better to say you think like me. I keep changing my should, would and could to I will , I can. This is the first post I read of yours and I connected. I write things out and I look back to find that I already am doing what I envisioned. Nice to meet you and thanks for finding my blog.
I really appreciate that you are following me especially since I have now found your blog and can follow you! I am really impressed with what I’ve read so far.
