Against The Grain

Determination is a measure of how much you believe in yourself.
I do have one caution though. Be determined about something that you want with every ounce of your soul. You can do anything you want in the world completely 100% authentic and uniquely you. This is the most beautiful fact about life. Anything that you want in this life can be yours. I just wanted to start off this post with that. Hustle, Patience, Big Dreams.
I saw City and Colour the other day at the Filmore in San Francisco and I can’t describe to you how amazing they were. I listen to music a lot. Rarely will you see me walking around school without my iPod headphones in. I’m not hiding from anything, but I am really just enjoying the hell out of my music and getting into the lyrics and the meaning of some of these songs. I also start to get goosebumps when I am overwhelmed with emotion from a song. So I am standing 50 ft away from the stage with one of my best friends Hannah, and I am just entrenched in Dallas Green’s voice and his passion for his songs. A lot of people ask if it bugs him that his song are a little depressing, and he says “If you don’t like my music then don’t listen to it.” I listen to his music and I draw a few parallels with his music and my blog towards the beginning of its life. I was talking about a lot of things that people really didn’t want to bring up. What guy in this day and age wants to really truly say that he is hurting badly. Moreover, who wants to be in that hurt for a while and consistently voice that opinion and show the struggle. Not many. But if you are struggling, be vulnerable. Being vulnerable with people and with yourself is one of the most powerful things you can do. If you just sit with your emotions and take them as just an emotion, nothing more and nothing less, it will pass. But if you fight it and make it wrong or right, you’re going to be stuck in that for a long time. Just a little piece of knowledge I received out of that whole situation. So back to Dallas. I listen to him up there on stage and am just overcome with these emotions. Also, it was definitely bringing me back to a time last year when I was listening to his music. In my opinion, he is one of the most talented singers out there.
I chose the song Body in a Box because I want to talk about something that is unbelievably important to me. Of course at face level you might be hearing about death and dying and how bad it is…but that’s not the message of the song and that is surely not what I am going to be talking about. For me, when I hear this song, I think about laying to rest your old self and committing into the world your new one. I do this every single morning. I wake up, I go through this little book I made with all the things that are important to me (this thing is growing like crazy) and I write out my goals and what I am committed to doing every single day. Whatever happened yesterday doesn’t matter! I am not saying that like a sports commercial…I am saying it because it is true. You cannot go to yesterday. The person that can go to yesterday, well let me know because I want to see what shenanigans you are pulling. Also, you cannot go to someday island. Almost everyone believes that things will be better someday. Whether that is tomorrow or years from now. I just want to let you know this right now…if its the only thing you learn from me ever. There is no other time but now. You will never be satisfied when you reach that someday island because it is just a made up motivator in your mind. This moment, right now, is the only thing that is important to you. Do everything you can to pay attention to this moment. Lay your body to rest. Stay out of yesterday. Don’t worry about tomorrow. There are no dull moments.

Stop searching for a better way to live your life.
Make a declaration into the world of who you are going to be and what you are going to be up to in the world, and go out and do it. Yesterday I drew a little ( I. ) on the inside of my finger. This stands for Integrity. Keep integrity with your word. You owe it to yourself. Go out into the world and give it your all today. What is written on my little white board is “Do your damn best today and keep your integrity.”
