War Of My Life

I was great

I was happy

I felt amazing

And you dropped this on me

You threw it at me

And tore it all up

Half of me didn’t expect this from you

The other half knew better

Here I am

In the war of my life

I fought to put these feelings behind me

But they bubbled to the surface

The continued to explode onto the scene

Taking my mind places I didn’t want it to

And as much as I hated it

They demanded my attention

It may have been years ago

But I remember the smell of burning hay

And how just one match can burn an unsuspecting pile down

I didn’t see then

I see now

I didn’t just suffer because of this

Others were caught in the crossfire

And my heart aches for them as well

Had to do what I knew was right

Despite the tears

But now we settle this

We finish it

Because enough is enough

I know I failed

I know I thought I could

But I’m 10 times more of a man because of it

Because I didn’t let fear let me sit around saying “what if?”

I know I lost

In more ways than one

I won’t forget

You sometimes get a taste of dreams

And then the man in the ground works his ways

Attacking precisely where he knows to

Tearing you apart from the top down

Turning you inside out

But if there is no enemy within

Nothing outside can do you no harm

I’m smoking you out

You’re gone

We’re done
