The Speech

He heard his name announced, took a deep breath, and walked out into the light.

In front of him were hundreds of people standing and clapping.

For a second, he was almost moved to tears…but knew that he couldn’t get choked up.

He just stood there.

He took a bow, and put his hands up for the crowd to sit down.

He walked back to his left and grabbed the mic.

He looked out into the crowd, and took a deep breath.

But before he said anything…

He smiled.

He spoke

Socrates once said that “true knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing.”. I, in fact, know nothing. But, because I know nothing, I have given myself the opportunity to learn from everything. That is why I am here in front of you today. And that is how The Better Man Project was born.

Three years ago I sat on the bed in my small dorm room and realized that whatever path I was on was destined for disaster. I was desperately trying to contain an emotional tornado inside of me…but realized that the damage was reaching a point of irreversibility. The forces of change were knocking on my door, and if that call was left unanswered, my worst nightmare was right around the corner waiting for me.

I decided to try something new. The Better Man Project was originally intended to be a 30 day challenge towards becoming a better man. I decided that I would focus on one thing a day that I could implement in my life in order to become a better man. Two weeks later, I was faced with one of the hardest situations I have ever had to deal with in my entire life. The loss of one of my best friends. I was heartbroken.

The project passed 30 days, 60 days, 90 days…and now I stand in front of you, the product of 聽well over 1,000 days of spelunking deep into the depths of my heart, lantern in hand, searching for answers.

I am not here to give you a formula. I am not here to tell you what to do or how to do it. Instead, I am here to tell you why you should embark on a journey that will be marked with significant amounts of suffering…but in the end, results in one thing: happiness.

Each and every one of you will have a different path. No two will be the same. But they will all have something in common, and that is the fact that you will be going against the grain. You will have faced your fears head on, swam against societies current…designed to groom you into everyone else, and you will have overcome significant obstacles in order to achieve your dreams. Most importantly though, you will have removed “can’t” from your vocabulary…and become someone who perpetually dreams of what they can be. Then, you will go out and do it.

Millions and millions of people open self-help books, attend seminars, and search for answers outside of themselves. I, like the many, have traveled down this path…and still do in order to gain perspective on life. And don’t get me wrong, there has been unbelievable amounts of change created because of these methods. However, true, everlasting transformation is only achieved through one single entity: yourself.

Love. Passion Never Quit. The three things that define me down to my core…..

He spoke on….

You are onto something with this project. It’s in the wind…or the water. I have been writing about a similar journey…my own:) And I have encountered a theme with with other bloggers. It is great to see you be a leader in the charge of the inner journey. Keep up the good work.

I know it’s been a few days since you posted this, but I totally understand what you are saying here. When I entered the “blogging world” I found a lot of different types of blogs. But the ones that I really connect with are the “baring my soul” ones, like yours. Blogging has been a God send for me, the writing and the reading. It has changed my life, stripped away lies that I believed about myself that I never knew really needed to be stripped away but now that they are gone, there is such freedom. Keep going, in helping yourself, you are definitely helping others, too.
