The Reps of Life

The only reps you don’t grow from, are the ones you don’t do. Your muscles may be burning, there may be sweat dripping into your eyes, you might be gasping for air…but what gets you past that point? Never let fear be the deciding factor of your decisions. When I get to that point…in my head I call it the “reach back” rep. The rep where it is all willpower…and has nothing to do with tested strength. The only way you know if you can lift 500lbs…is to try. I did. I can.

As always, I make the connection between the gym and life…and I want to share an interesting conversation I had with one of my friends last night over a beer just hanging on our front porch. I told him…”You know, if you never try to tell her you like her, you will never get a yes or a no. Getting a no sometimes is winning, because you can then refocus your time onto someone who wanted to actually buy your brand in the first place. We are often paralyzed by fear so much that we fail to recognize that someone saying no to us is one of the best things that can happen. Then, you are powerful. Without action, you are powerless.” He nodded…and said…”I guess I never really thought of it like that.”

It is moments like this where I smile because I know that I brought perspective to a situation in someone’s life. Not the answer, but just an answer. At least…something that has worked for me. Sometimes you have to put it all on the table for people, and let the chips fall where they may. They not be looking to buy your brand, but that’s okay! People have their preferences…and by god…some people like buying Twinkies and some like 60 – 40 hamburger meat…those are two things that my brand does not represent. When you think of it that way, life becomes a lot simpler. What does your brand represent…and who do you think would be willing to buy it?

When your brand represents certain things: accountability, loyalty, integrity, honor…automatically you are going to be unliked by people. Then…when you actually DO what you say you represent…people aren’t going to like you even more. They will talk behind your back, they will try to bring you down, they will be bitter…and not because what you are doing is a bad thing…it is because what you are doing is exposing them and their weaknesses. When you are on a path of movement and light…those stuck in the dark will either see it and move with you, or they will stay in the dark mumbling to themselves. You cannot be liked by everyone when you are looking to change the game. It is impossible and it is unhealthy to try to please every person you  come into contact with. That doesn’t mean you can’t be nice to people, but naturally, you are going to butt heads with some people. Perfectly fine as long as you stay true to your moral compass.

Remember…put yourself out there for the world to see…expect great things out of yourself, expect there to be trials and tribulations, adversaries…but always remember…the only reps you don’t grow from…are the ones you don’t do.

Yet another powerful message. I really liked the part about letting someone say no so you can focus you energy on something else. Like your friend, I never thought about it that way and that is a great way to look at things.

Great advice on how to stay focused on what one has to do. Like u said, it wont help missing a rep, i think it will just make u reconsider what u have to do and in the end, u will doubt your self.

I have enjoyed immensely reading your blog. As a writer I know you will understand if I am absent from making comments for a couple of months. I have two books I’m writing and the push is on to get them finished…so with only 24 hours in the day, I am going to continue to read and like, but my comments will be limited to replies for those who comment on my blog…thanks for the grace.

    Be encouraged!

The fact that it’s like water — nothing really blocks our happiness. It’s just a matter of looking elsewhere to find a path to where we want to be. 😀
